I usually love anything Japanese in the fashion world, though not so much of the kinky, over-the-top kawaii, cute, girlie girl that often exist in the characters of animes and mangas. Of course, references are made in some of the pieces portrayed, such as the infamous Sailor Moon amongst similar ones, in this collection but the subtlety is why I like Kenzo’s AW16; the hint of some Japanese fantasy along with the femininity and delicateness of the pieces, with some that flows with the direction of the wind and motion of the model. It is simply entertaining and beautiful at the same time, capturing the differences in status and attitude as each model walk the runway.
The show opened with the American national anthem playing, giving tribute to where the American designers for Kenzo, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, come from. They are residents of Paris and are influenced by Parisian couture but it is obvious that these pieces are strongly American led with a touch of France and Japan at the same time, making it a perfect mash between smart, casual and fun.
